Indian Movies....+ What the Butler Saw

Hi, first of all thank u ALL for participating so actively to the previous post !!! 200 comments, u rock people, it was very interesting to see ur comments and points of view as single /married/boy/girl :) Doing a joint post with Keshi was awesome and with a topic like that, we can talk about it forever!

Now, yesterday night I watch a 3 hours Indian movie, that a colleague of mine from Hyderabad brought here. I have seen a couple of bollywood movies that we have here in Ireland but it s mostly the commercial ones like (Om Shanti Om, Love Story 2050) and the thing that I noticed it s most of the time, there is LOTS of colors, lots of dance and music, and love story (with NO kissing, i m not even mentionning sex) and always a happy ending.

I ve seen recently one called "Brick Lane" and yes for the first time I have seen a not so happy ending story with a very intimate scene, now I don t know if it is a real indian movie and how people react in Indian when they saw the movie? (u can answer that question people :)

SO yesterday I ve seen Rang De Basanti, and I must say I went a bit emotional at the end of it, for the first time I ve seen a kiss (and I believe it is an Indian movie:) and a sad story! It was a long movie but I did not get bored during it, we pretty much did not stop the movie during the intermission.
I even recognized some actors like one of the main actors (the one playing the muslim with long hair) I ve seen him a recent movie that I forgot the name (of course) and I was happy to see the one playing the father of the muslim, I think he was the one playing the main role in the movie 'The city of Joy' :)
I really like it, now I have a couple of questions that u might be able to answer to it, please do so people:
- it s a movie from 2006, does it reflect what s going in India nowaday?
- Do u have real intermission during movie at the cinema? What do u do then? Can u go out of the movie room?
- Can u tell m which good Indian movies I should watch with or without happy ending :)

I am not very creative tonite (was a bit sick today :( ) so it won t be a loooooong post today, but i m happy to say that we finally finish the DVD of the play I did 2 months ago. For the first time I played with some colleagues of mine in a play called "What the Butler saw" originally played in 1969 by Joe Orton, 2 years after he died from tragical conditions in 1967. Now, the original played was pretty... well it is hard to describe it. But see what s wikipedia said about it:

"Orton's controversial farce What The Butler Saw debuted in the West End after his death in 1969. It opened at the Queen's Theatre. It was booed so loudly by gallery first nighters that the critics could not hear the lines.
[...]
The play was Orton's last before his death in 1967. The first public performance of the play - almost two years after Orton’s brutal murder - was reportedly barracked with cries of "filth!""

And he died from:
"On August 0, 1967,
Halliwell bludgeoned the 34-year-old Orton to death with nine hammer blows to the head, and then committed suicide with an overdose of 22 Nembutal tablets washed down with the juice from canned grapefruit. Investigators determined that Halliwell died first, because Orton's body was still warm."

U can find a sum up of the original story here if u dare to do so :) we haven t play the entire play for two reasons:
-the words he used specially in the second act were too difficult to understand or to pronounce since all of the actors were foreigners :)
- the second act was way too harsh (including topics like incest, murder and so and so) that we thought won t be appropriate in front of our co-workers, plus we wanted to avoid the 'filth!' at the end of the show, so we kept only the funny parts of it. I was playing Doctor Rance a crazy psichiatrist, I really enjoyed doing it, and for my first play, and in english it was not too bad I must say :)

Ok, I m done with this post, I finish with the picture of the day that i actually took last saturday, to show u that YES sometimes, rarely, but sometimes, the weather is nice in Ireland, it did not not rained the ENTIRE weekend which is amazing for the end of september!!! It was taken at the Trinity College, the biggest university in Dublin

Bye for now People and yeah tomorrow It s Thanks God It s Friday!!!!!

TY Cess for accommodating that joint post here in ur space and also for the great job with the post and the comments MWAH! :) I had fun...we all did.

Now, I watch Indian movies to unwind, listen to some sweet romantic music and look at some gorgeous ladies with gorgeous outfits...thats abt it.

Sex in Indian movies? I hope I'd get to see it in my next life atleast? *rolling eyes* It's as if sex is taboo in India...so how come the population grows? lol!

But there r some really great non-commercial, low-budget Indian movies..they r the REALISTIC ones. U should get them to watch. I recommend WATER...my beloved John Abraham is in it too..but thats not why I recommended it to ya. :)Its a real good movie abt an Indian child-bride...who became a widow at just 8yrs of age. U gotta see it to know what I mean.

Most Bolly movies r just for fun and glamor. Boy meets girl, girl's parents dun like the boy, a villain tries to snatch the girl, boy puts up a big fight and wins the girl...in the end the entire family is doin the bhangra! LOL Im sick of the same FORMULA!

Great pic of the Uni wow! Very nice. I wanna visit Dublin some day. My cousins went there on a holiday and brought some very GREEN scenic pics. So beautiful!

My focus increases towards the movie if there is a scene you talked about.
;)

- it s a movie from 2006, does it reflect what s going in India nowaday?
NO. It is a story-writer thought presented onscreen by director. May be the idea of story could be generated by watching a news, reading a book or real-life experience but will say it can not reflect India.

- Do u have real intermission during movie at the cinema? What do u do then? Can u go out of the movie room?
Yes, we go out of the movie-room and buy some snacks and then come back. Interval is for 5 mins. Yes and loo too.

- Can u tell m which good Indian movies I should watch with or without happy ending :)

Mughal=E-Azam - Sad ending
Starring - Dileep Kumar
Shakti - sad ending
Starring : Amitabh Bachchan

Masoom - Happy ending
Starring - Naseeruddin Shah

India has a censor board which prohibits explicit display of sex. If they don't then our political parties and social groups would force the government to censor such movies and even vandalize the cinema halls running such movies.

Bollywood tries to compensate absence of sex with lot of dance, music and a good script.

Keshi

* It's as if sex is taboo in India...so how come the population grows? lol!

Surprises me too. Why population doesn't grow in countries having lot of on-screen sex? lol!

++vandalize the cinema halls running such movies.++ wow that s pretty harsh, I guess the Indian who come to live in Europe/USA are not the Extremist ones otherwise they will burn a lots of cinema there!

++Bollywood tries to compensate absence of sex with lot of dance, music and a good script.++
it makes sense, but sometimes just a little kiss would be nice :)

++Surprises me too. Why population doesn't grow in countries having lot of on-screen sex? lol!++
because there is TOO much movies with sex scenes ! It s boring at some point :) Plus there is less marriage in Europe so less babies as well, we still have sex but no babies :)

CONGOOOOOOOOO :D

Mira Nair’s MONSOON WEDDING is fun..it doesn’t have a sad ending but it’s a far cry frm the stereotypical Bollywood fanfare!

Ditto for Farhan Akhtar’s ROCK ON..its a small budget rock film tht is fresh in terms of the theme and story telling!

Do watch A WEDNESDAY and MUMBAI MERI JAAN..(both deal with terrorism) and TAHAAN is a must watch.. its a fable-like journey of an eight-year old boy who lives in the Kashmir valley ..the performances are top-notch

Aamir Khan’s TAARE ZAMEEN PAR is India's official entry into the Oscars..its abt a dyslexic kid coping with life..and his art teacher’s contribution in shaping his career..i cudnt stop crying..

Indian cinema is evolving..The Hindi film industry is no more abt running-around-the-tress and candy floss romance!

he he, i have to say that the thing we cut off on the play is way more than sex and kiss, more disturbing than anything, and yeah, apparently Indians like in any other countries were sex/kiss/boobs are censored in the press/tc/movies are a big fan of the internet to look for the un-censored :)

Well Indians are Movie and Cricket (it is a sport) crazy.
Leave me alone,my parents watch a movie a week.
Now a days there are like 3-4 movies releasing every week.
By the way ght guy who played the father of the Muslim chap is Om Puri.
He is one of the finest actors we have had.

India movie all about song and dance. All fromula stuff like Keshi put it.

But these days Indian movie are reduced to too much of glam quotient, but core skills of acting are diminishing.

I suggest you watch Munnabhai, a sequel of two movies.really funny.

By the way movies made in down south India are technically superior and they but Hindi movies have a greater reach.

What kind a movie do you like to see?

That movie actor is Kunal Kapoor and you must have seen him in "Meenaxi" a movie which no one in India saw ;)

And all your queries have been answered I guess... If you really want to see a real Indian movie.. try out some oldies.. Now a days mostly are copy paste from Hollywood.. although Brilliant exceptions like Rang de Basanti are always there.. I hope you must have liked it.. we all did because it is really very close to today's India..

and why do you need some intimate scenes in Indian movies? what is the need? I believe that need can be satisfied by watching non-Indian movies.. although now a days, an Indian movie without a kiss is considered a flop..!

Cess said...

++Kunal Kapoor and you must have seen him in "Meenaxi" a movie which no one in India saw ;)++ he he no it was not in this movie, It was a girl who was a dancer in a small city in India, she left to NY because her parents wanted her to get married to someone she did not want, she went to NY to become a dance teacher. But 1o years she came back to save the old theater of the city that rich people want to destroy to build a parking. So she wants the population to go back to this theater to keep it, and she creates a dance/play where the main male actor is Kunal Kapoor

++I hope you must have liked it.. we all did because it is really very close to today's India++ yep I liked it :)

i really enjoyed the last post and writing the comments. that was fun..:)

yaaaayy i am also from hyderabad.. 3 cheers for that.. yaaaayyy..

yeh u are rite.. its all colours.. song n dance.. emotions.. with no sex involved.. atleast most of the time.. no a days.. we do have bits of kissing scence's shown..

well i havent watched brick lane yet.. so cant talk about that though..
rang de basanti.. its emotional.. and its more like trying to break free the shackles that u have right now.. so ppl end up relating to it..

the movie genre is something u can relate.. or something that u wish could happen to you.. thats why a movie works.

hnnm i would suggest a movie called hyderabad blues.. its about an indian guy who is US returned and is searching for a girl. Its in english and was the first one to be produced in the new genre movies ..

you could also watch bride and prejudice .. inspired by pride n prejudice.. :)

and the must see is Cheeni- Kum.. its an Amitabh Bachan movie and its so funny and yet so controversial in its own right..

hope u have loads of fun watching them..
take care.. hugggzzz :)

TGIF - for sure!!!!

Congrats on the play and if you can upload it someplace so we can critic it ;)

About Indian movies - its a sad state....somehow they have become more of a selling cheap goods that does not last long rather than good fare...

One recent movie tho
- A Wednesday is good - has some veteran actors
- If you like Rang De - you might want to watch Aamirs other movies
Dil Chahta Hai and Taara Zameen Par ( the later might be indias entry to oscar this year)
and then there are movies that have Indian influence but directed by Indian directors not in India...
Would recommend you see Monsoon Wedding and Namesake - both my Mira Nair...

LEmme know if you like any :) and have a gr8 weekend....and a nice shot of the college

**Why population doesn't grow in countries having lot of on-screen sex?

cos here in Aus, Sex is a need as much as Food and Shelter r. And ppl r educated abt it and hv sex to hv fun and as well satisfy a need, hence ppl know very well abt Birth Control too. ppl buy Condoms almost like buying milk on a daily basis :)

But in countries like Sri Lanka and India where Sex is looked upon as taboo, buying a condom is such an embarassing thing for young ppl...so ppl go wild when they do hv sex and end up having babies each time they hv sex! hence the population grows lol!

Keshi.

Keshi said...

Bro and Tarun...but I wudnt say ALL Indian movies r nonsense...they hv some really deep stories, culture, music and dance compared to Western movies. And there r some Sinhalese movies that hv really touched me...sad stories of real ppl, caught in cruel circumstances of life.

It all depends on the movie (story)...not which country it was made in. :)

Some answers to your questions Cess:

* It s a movie from 2006, does it reflect what s going in India nowaday?
It did not reflect what India is going through but it did affect how Indians react to certain issues. The idea of the candle light vigil was taken up by peaceful protesters across the country to stand up against injustice and assert their rights.

- Do u have real intermission during movie at the cinema? What do u do then? Can u go out of the movie room?
Yes, we do have a real intermission during which we get ourselves something to eat or drink (non-alcoholic beverages only) or go attend the nature's call.

- Can u tell m which good Indian movies I should watch with or without happy ending :)

You must, must watch some off beat Indian movies to get an idea of the variety and scope of Indian cinema. I recommend the following:

1. A Wednesday
2. Black
3. Bombay
4. Taare Zameen Par
